COVID-19 cases zoom to 1,029

Just five months after recording the first case of the novel coronavirus, Guyana yesterday surpassed 1000 cases of the disease.

This was observed through the Ministry of Health’s COVID-19 dashboard which showed that some 74 new cases of the virus were recorded during the last testing cycle and as such the number of cases in the country now stands at 1,029. Some 330 more persons were tested for the virus within the last 24 hours which increased the total number of persons tested to 7,234. Just about 14% of all persons who were tested for the virus have returned positive results.

According to the regional breakdown of cases recorded in Guyana, new cases were registered in six of Guyana’s ten administrative regions. Forty-seven of the 74 new cases were recorded in Region Four while 13 were registered in Region Seven. From statistics produced by the ministry, COVID-19 cases appear to be spiking in Region Four again as 155 cases were recorded in the Region from August 17th to date.

There are currently 66 persons in institutional isolation while 409 persons are within approved home isolation. Five hundred and ten persons have so far recovered from the virus while no new death as a result of the virus has been recorded. The dashboard showed that 101 persons are in institutional isolation even as 13 persons are currently in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit.
