Corentyne labourer fatally stabbed

A Corentyne man is now dead while another is nursing injuries to his face after they were attacked by two armed men along the Albion Public Road on Saturday evening while returning home from work.

Dead is Orlando Jonas also known as `Lando’, 26, a labourer of Lot 500 Num-ber 1 Road, Corentyne. Jonas’s friend, Ramnarine also known `Mickey’, 18, a labourer, of Lot 628 Number 1 Road, Corentyne, sustained lacerations on both sides of his mouth.

According to a police source, Jonas and Ramnarine were heading home from work on their bicycles when they were confronted by the two suspects who have since been detained at the Albion Police Station, a stone’s throw away from where the incident transpired.

Ramnarine told investigators that as he and Jonas were passing the suspects one of them hurled derogatory remarks at them which resulted in Jonas turning around and approaching the suspects.

Ramnarine said he urged Jonas to ignore them but at that point one of the suspects had already taken out a knife and attacked Ramnarine which led to him fleeing.

Jonas sustained a stab wound to the left side of his abdomen, a wound on the left side of his jaw and another under his chin.

After the attack, the two suspects ventured over to the nearby Albion Police Station where they alleged that Jonas and Ramnarine had attempted to rob them.

Based on this report, police then ventured to the scene where they noticed Jonas on the main public road. His relatives were contacted and they then rushed him to the Port Mourant Hospital where Jonas was pronounced dead on arrival.

Jonas’s aunt, Jacqueline Jonas, stated, that she received the message that her nephew had been  murdered. “My daughter left and she went and when I finish bathing I go to the hospital and he was already dead”.

“They (the suspects) are claiming that my nephew and the boy he was with tried to rob them but it’s the reverse they (suspects) tried to rob my nephew”, the aunt asserted yesterday.

She described her nephew, a father of one, to be extremely hardworking.

Ramnarine has since been released from the hospital and is at home nursing his injuries.

When visited yesterday Ramnarine told Stabroek News that he was unable to speak due to his injuries.

The young man’s father, Sham Ramnarine said that he is a carpenter and his son and Jonas were working with him.

“We went to a work place and we left to come home. So one a them boy drop me home with vehicle and the two riding them cycle come home and we pass and come away with the vehicle and by time we reach home we get message that them get stab”.

Both sets of relatives yesterday said that the suspects are not known to the victims.
