Engineer dies after falling four storeys

A 69-year-old engineer died yesterday after a four-storey fall at a construction site at Happy Acres, on the East Coast of Demerara.

In a statement, the Guyana Police Force said the accident that claimed the life of Keith Scipio, of Lot 12 Kissoon Scheme, Good Hope, occurred around 11.30 am at Lot 112-113 Happy Acres.

According to the police, investigations disclosed that Scipio left home and went to work at the construction site for a four-storey steel and concrete building, where he held a meeting with the workers on the fourth floor around 10.35 am.

After the meeting concluded, the workers proceeded with the work they were doing before and a few minutes later Scipio was observed walking towards a hole located at the centre of the floor.

One of the workers reportedly tried to alert Scipio but was unsuccessful and he fell through the hole. The witness, who subsequently raised an alarm, rushed to the bottom of the floor, where he found the deceased lying motionless on the concrete surface of the ground in a pool of blood and with injuries to his head.

The workers rushed him to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Nonetheless, police added that Scipio’s death was being investigated.
