Den Amstel man held for killing brother after drink-fuelled row

A 65-year-old Den Amstel man is now in police custody for allegedly killed his younger brother after a drinking session at Den Amstel, West Coast Demerara (WCD) on Thursday night.

The fatal row between the now deceased Winston Jordan, 55, of Back Street, Den Amstel, and his brother occurred around 6.45 pm, a short distance from Jordan’s home.

The police yesterday confirmed that the suspect was later arrested and was in custody assisting with their investigations.

According to a Guyana Police Force statement, enquiries revealed that the brothers were drinking before Jordan left and his brother followed after him.

The suspect allegedly grabbed Jordan, who held on to a neighbour’s gate. The suspect nevertheless continued and police say Jordan lost grip of the gate, after which the suspect allegedly pushed him to the ground, causing him to hit his head.

As a result, Jordan fell unconscious and the suspect allegedly dragged him across the street and threw him into a trench.

Jordan was pulled out of the trench and taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

When contacted yesterday, Jordan’s niece, who asked not to be named, told Stabroek News that she had been hearing various accounts of what transpired leading to Jordan’s death. “I hearing all kinda thing and I don’t know which one to believe,” the woman said.

She added that she last saw Jordan alive on Thursday afternoon. Hours after, she said she received a call informing her that he had died.
