A feature noticeable in almost every period and place, seems to be statements and actions by community and national leaders, inconsistent with their own best interest and certainly not contributory to the well-being and integrity of the group they represent.
In Guyana today, this phenomenon exists and it will take a super human effort to arrest this folly of walking in a dark place without the help of mental and physical illumination.
We have the history of perhaps waiting for almost half of a year to have our last national and regional election results declared, and in spite of this painful hiatus, a substantial portion of our population are yet to accept the declared results by the Chairman of GECOM, and if there is any argument about this, no one on either side of the political divide can doubt that the perception exists that the 2020 elections remains an unsettled matter, as we sit, hope and pray that the sane and genuine patriots will yet provide the bridge over troubled water.
A few weeks ago, the two Henry cousins were tortured to death, two Afro-Guyanese from West Coast Berbice.
Shortly after, a seventeen-year-old Indo-Guyanese, Haresh Singh was killed in a neighbouring community.
Apart from formal statements that the investigation is on-going, we are yet to be told if the undertaking given by President Ali to make all resources available to bring the murderers to justice has been fulfilled.
The President told us, for example, that he will seek professional help from overseas.
The question is, has this been done and what is the present state of affairs?
Investigation of events, in certain parts of West Coast Berbice required swift and intensive scrutiny.
In an earlier correspondence, I contended that there was no need to seek outside assistance but that any additional support that the Police may need, is available among retired personnel from our security forces.
All that was required is for the police to be allowed to function without political interference and or direction.
Could the President and Minister say how many ranks (quantity and quality) were deployed to solve the murder of these three teenagers?
Before the Minister or Commissioner of Police answers, let them be reminded that Superintendent Singh had forty-seven ranks deployed to recover what they claim to be state property in the form of barber chairs.
The foundation of a true democracy and one that allows for harmony and stability is where there is justice for all, equity and where the public and security services are allowed to function in a professional manner.
Next, an Election petition has been filed.
We expect similar efforts to bring this matter to conclusion as were made in the legal matters related to Elections 2020.
The old cliché of justice delayed is justice denied; holds good today as it did yesterday.
The other important issue is that our government must be careful not to appear that we are being re-colonized by superpowers and walk carefully, so we are not embroiled in the likely rebirth of Cold War politics and policies.
