Bandits grab over $2M after beating Canal No. 1 businessman

A businessman was beaten and robbed of over $2 million at his Canal Number One, West Bank Demerara residence on Monday.

Police say Narindeo Jairam, 64, and his worker, Kristamattie, also known as ‘Devi,’ 48, were attacked by four suspected bandits, one of whom was armed with a handgun.

A Guyana Police Force statement said Jairam had just returned home from conducting business at Gafoor’s and was sitting in his hammock, where he was eating, when he saw the men, who were masked, enter his yard.

The suspect that was armed with a gun dealt Jairam a blow to the left side of his forehead before sitting on the man, while his accomplices grabbed Kristamattie and dealt her several blows about her body.

The statement added that she suffered injuries to the left side of her chin.

The suspects, after gaining access into the house, broke into a canister containing $2.2 million, which they took.

As the men fled, they encountered the victim’s son, Ammardatt Jairam, 40, of Noitgadacht, Canal Number One, who was entering the yard. They relieved him of $200,000, before the men made their escape in a white car that was waiting on them.

The victim and his help were both treated at the Canal Health Centre for injuries received.
