The Good Life Supermarket at Canefield, East Canje, Berbice, was burgled on Sunday evening for the second time in three months.

The supermarket which is located at Lot 1 Canefield Public Road, East Canje, Berbice, is operated by Wang Wei Xiong, 32, a Chinese national residing at Pope Street, New Amsterdam. The building also houses a storage bond.

According to information gathered, two perpetrators broke into the building on Sunday evening.  There were two guards at the location, who quickly contacted the owners and police.

Sources said the lawmen quickly arrived at the scene and nabbed one perpetrator while the second escaped with the stolen items.

This newspaper was told that $100,000 in cash and a quantity of phone cards were stolen.

Commander of Region Six, Senior Superintendent Linden Isles, on Tuesday told Stabroek News that one of the perpetrators who was nabbed at the scene remains in police custody while investigators were on the hunt for the second suspect.

However, residents in the area claimed that the perpetrator who escaped sustained a gunshot injury.

Isles said that he could not confirm this but stressed that investigators promptly arrived on scene and made attempts to nab both perpetrators.

The Good Life Supermarket opened last year and this is the fifth time that persons have broken into the building since the opening.

The last reported burglary was in July when the perpetrators escaped with a computer in the cashier area, which was estimated to have been valued at $200,000; the CCTV monitor, valued $200,000; a camera valued $11,000; $100,000 in phone cards; $80,000 in cigarettes; and $400,000 in cash, among other items.

In July, the supermarket only had one elderly guard on staff but this newspaper was told that the operators had hired a second person to guard the building in the evenings after the previous burglary.

Police are continuing their investigation.
