Deputy Chief Election Officer charged with misconduct in public office

Deputy Chief Election Officer, Roxanne Myers was this morning granted $300,000 bail after facing criminal charges at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court.

Myers who was in police custody up to last evening was this morning brought before the courts and read two counts of misconduct in public office. According to attorney-at-law Ronald Daniels, who is one of Myers’ attorneys, she was granted bail in the sum of $150,000 for each charge and the prosecution was given two weeks to continue their investigations before returning to court for report.

Daniels said that the prosecution indicated to the court that they are still investigating and as such the period was granted. The attorney also said that the prosecution objected to bail being granted due to the serious nature of the charges, i.e. attempting to undermine the country’s democracy.

According to the police, Myers was arrested on Tuesday after she turned herself into the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Headquarters accompanied by her attorneys. She was informed that she would be arrested for alleged obstruction of justice and she maintained her right to remain silent and was later refused bail.

The police announced that an investigation into the March elections and the events that occurred during the ensuing five months up to when President Irfaan Ali was declared the winner on August 2nd started some time ago. As such a number of individuals including APNU+AFC agent Volda Lawrence and several GECOM officials have faced charges stemming from their alleged involvement in the manipulation of the elections results.
