The Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) is now supplying residents of Esau and Jacob, Mahaicony, in Region Five, with potable water.

The utility company on Friday credited an intervention by Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water Susan Rodrigues with ensuring the new supply to residents following a number of failed attempts in recent years.

GWI said in a statement that on Friday, October 8th, the Minister along with Permanent Secretary Andre Ally and a team of GWI and regional officials visited the area to get a firsthand look at the works undertaken.

Rodrigues was reported as saying that a resident, Nyoka Persaud, recently reached out to the ministry about the struggles being faced by residents in accessing potable water.

Residents previously relied on the rain and purchased water during the dry season, since the nearby river does not provide fresh water. The GWI statement noted that in order to execute the project, the ministry received assistance from Tamesh Jagmohan’s Pure Harvest Inc, which provided 266 lengths of pipes to facilitate individual service connections to households for the first time. It added that the works, which entailed connecting pipelines to the Strath Campbell well station, laying distribution lines and installing individual service connections, were executed by GWI in collaboration with Jagmohan’s workers.

Minister Rodrigues noted that the ministry is appreciative of the private sector support and community effort to work alongside GWI to bring immediate relief, while explaining that the ministry did not get to cater for the area in its current budget.

According to GWI, Rodrigues said her priority is to provide potable water access to unserved communities by the end of government’s first term.

The statement added that Regional Executive Officer of Region Five Genevieve Blackman, Region Five Chairman Vickchand Ramphal and residents expressed their gratitude for the timely intervention, while adding that it would provide major relief to the community.
