Chris Gayle, Andre Russell and Carlos Brathwaite were the only West Indians to be drafted in the inaugural Lankan Premier League (LPL).

The draft took place yesterday and will see the tournament bowl off on November 21 and end December 13.

Five teams will contest the league.

Chris Gayle

Gayle, 41, was snapped up by Kandy Tuskers. He has featured in all major franchise leagues around the world and is regarded as one of the more dangerous batsmen in the format. The left-hander is the format’s leading run-getter and also holds the records for most centuries and most sixes.

Gayle’s countryman, Andre Russell, also has a reputation of

Carlos Brathwaite

hitting the cricket ball a long way and has transformed himself into one of the most sought after players in the format. He will be plying his trade for the Colombo Kings.

The 32-year-old all-rounder has an imposing strike rate of 169 and is only the second player behind Dwayne Bravo to score over 5000 runs and take 300 wickets in the format.

Meanwhile, the former West Indies T20 captain, Brathwaite, will turn out for Dambulla Hawks. While losing his spot in the West Indies side, Brathwaite is remembered for famously hitting four consecutive sixes in the 2016 T20 World Cup final to give his side their second title.

The Sri Lankan government has not approved lenient quarantine measures for those coming into the country for the tournament, but SLC insists that the foreign players and officials taking part have all agreed to a strict 14-day quarantine, where arrivals are not allowed to leave their rooms.
