Two more COVID deaths reported, ministry still to confirm

Two more deaths as a result of COVID-19 were yesterday recorded even as ministry officials await to confirm them.

Toshao of Kwebanna in the Moruca Sub-district in Region One, Paul Pierre confirmed one of the deaths while a source at the Ministry of Health confirmed the death of the second person but did not provide any information on the death. This would increase Guyana’s death toll as a result of the virus to 116.

According to information received, the individual from Region One was identified as Mitchell Henry of Kwebanna, Moruca Sub-district who was a former head teacher. The information revealed that Henry had underlying conditions.

The man was reportedly a patient at the Kumaka District Hospital in Santa Rosa and was displaying symptoms of COVID-19. As a result he was then transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital last Sunday and subsequently died on Monday morning. Following his death he was tested for the virus and the results which came back yesterday showed that Henry was positive for COVID-19.

COVID-19 deaths in Guyana have risen significantly and deaths have been recorded almost daily subsequent to a minor spike in deaths on August 19th.

Meanwhile, 31 new cases were recorded in the country yesterday  increasing Guyana’s total number of cases recorded to 3,796. Of the 31 new cases, 18 were recorded in Region One, 4 in Region Four, 6 in Region Seven and one each in Regions Three, Eight and Nine.

There are 14 persons in the COVID-19 ICU even as there are 872 active cases in the country, 67 of whom are in institutional isolation and 805 in home isolation. Forty-one persons are in institutional quarantine. Some 125 more persons were tested during the last round of testing which increased the total number of persons tested to 17,256.
