Suspect in intrusion at CJ’s residence still in custody

The suspect who was arrested on Wednesday night, hours after he allegedly confronted ranks on duty at Chief Justice Roxane George-Wiltshire residence with a toy gun remains in police custody.

Stabroek News was reliably informed that the suspect, who hails from Agricola, East Bank Demerara (EBD) is believed to be the prime suspect in the matter.

The police had confirmed the incident which occurred around 2 pm. At the time, two police officers, a male and a female were present at the property.

According to a police press statement, the female rank left the guard hut and went into the washroom when she was confronted by the intruder who was armed with what appeared to be a handgun.

The suspect, the police said approached the rank and pointed the object at her. He also fired a punch at her but missed.

During the process, the rank called out for her colleague who was in the garage of the building. He was armed with a .38 revolver, the police added. “The rank having heard the call went out to see who it was when the said (intruder) pointed the object at him causing the rank to take cover,” the statement explained.

The intruder then dropped the object and escaped by scaling the fence. It is unclear what measures were immediately taken by the police to pursue the intruder.

The object that was pointed at the guard was then picked up, the police said.

The incident took place just hours before the case management conference scheduled for yesterday for the hearing of the petitions filed by the main Opposition A Partnership for National Unity+Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) challenging the results of the March 2nd polls.

In light of the incident, there has been an increase in security for the Chief Justice.
