A Venezuelan national was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with the murder of Sanjay Hanoman, the construction worker who reportedly bled to death after he was wounded on Sunday night.

Nestor Luis Bolivar Martines called ‘Carlos’, 22, a labourer of Sixth Street, Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara (WCD) appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court.

He was not required to plead to the indictable charge. The matter was adjourned until January 13th, 2021.

The accused and Hanoman are said to be friends. The incident which took place around 11.30 pm on Sunday at Anna Catherina, WCD reportedly stemmed from an old grievance involving Martines’ wife.

One of Hanoman’s friends, who witnessed the incident reportedly told the police that he bled to death after persons refused to assist in transporting him to the hospital.

According to the police, Hanoman also known as ‘Drill’ of Lot 28 Fourth Street, Anna Catherina was standing on Bus Shed Street, Anna Catherina with Martines.

Whilst there, the friend of Hanoman who was passing at the time reportedly told the police that he saw the suspect armed with an object, which appeared to be a cutlass. The friend alleged that he saw the suspect rubbing the object against Hanoman’s thigh. Shortly after, he said Hanoman fell to the ground.

The friend further added that he rushed towards Hanoman and noticed what appeared to be blood pouring from his thigh.

He said he tried to assist him but was unable to do so alone and others reportedly refused to help to transport him to the hospital.

About an hour after the incident, Hanoman was finally taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
