Former policeman Shawn Neblett, who is accused of conspiring to export cocaine to the United States, has been extradited.

Subsequent to extradition proceedings that were concluded in a Georgetown court before Magistrate Faith McGusty, Neblett’s extradition was granted.

During the proceedings, Neblett, 34, was a remand prisoner.

However, the former South Ruimveldt resident was yesterday handed over to federal authorities to be transported to the United States, where he will formally face multiple charges of cocaine trafficking.

The ex-policeman was wanted by the United States for conspiracy to import cocaine, importation of cocaine, conspiracy to possess cocaine with the intent to distribute and possession of cocaine with the intent to distribute.

According to the indictment, which was seen by Stabroek News, between August 2015 and September 2015, in the Eastern District of New York, Neblett conspired to smuggle cocaine into the US from Guyana. It was also alleged that in August 2015, he arranged for a courier in Guyana to smuggle cocaine into the US in exchange for US$8,000.

Earlier this year, Neblett’s attorney had moved to the High Court to have the matter thrown out as the attorney sought to have the finding of a prima facie case made against his client thrown out by the Chief Justice. This bid was unsuccessful.
