Guyana’s COVID-19 cases total over 5,000 since March

Guyana’s total number of COVID-19 cases has now surpassed the 5,000 mark, just over eight months since the confirmation of the first local case.

The Ministry of Health’s COVID-19 dashboard yesterday showed that some 29 more cases were recorded, which increased the total number of positive cases in the country to 5,005. The additional cases were recorded after 354 more persons were tested. The total number of persons tested in the country to date stands at 26,580.

The additional cases were recorded in seven of the country’s ten administrative regions: 7 more cases were recorded in Region One, 15 in Region Four, 3 in Region Seven and 1 each in Region Three, Region Five, Region Six and Region Ten.

According to the dashboard, there are currently 869 active cases in the country, 101 of which are in institutional isolation while some 768 are in home isolation. There are nine patients in the country’s COVID-19 intensive Care Unit (ICU) and 73 persons who were either in contact with positive cases or are suspected cases of the virus are currently in institutional quarantine.

The number of deaths as a result of the virus remained at 143.
