Heavy rainfall in Region Eight continues to delay the re-construction of the bridge at Tiger Creek which collapsed more than three weeks ago.

The bridge collapsed on November 3rd while a heavy-duty truck was crossing. No one was injured. At that time, the Regional Engineer Wendell St Pierre told the Department of Public Information (DPI) that from a preliminary assessment the bridge appears to have collapsed due to a damaged beam.

While the Ministry of Public Works (MoPW) had crafted a three-week timeline for the completion of emergency works on the bridge, works have been delayed repeatedly due to heavy rainfall in the area.

“The Contractor has completed driving centre support piles and started works on the abutment, however, the proposed completion date of December 2 may shift based on these delays,” a representative of the Ministry told Stabroek News yesterday.

In addition, it was stated that traffic continues to flow across the bypass but remedial works will be needed shortly given the road’s deterioration as a result of the heavy rains. The Ministry is working to have the bridge re-constructed in the shortest possible time.
