Driver flees after killing pedestrian at Hydronie

Police are searching for a driver who fled the scene of an accident on Friday night after hitting and killing a pedestrian on the Hydronie Public Road, on the East Bank of Essequibo.

The Guyana Police Force said after the driver hit pedestrian Kayum Alie, of Bushy Park Squatting Area, East Bank Essequibo, he fled the scene on foot. 

The accident occurred at approximately 9.55pm.

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the driver was proceeding south along the western lane of the eastern carriageway, allegedly at a fast rate of speed, and collided with the pedestrian who was standing on the median.

As a result of the impact, the driver’s car turtled and crashed into a nearby shop which is situated on the western side of the western carriageway.

It was revealed that the car halted after the crash and it was at that point the driver exited and fled the scene.

Police said the pedestrian sustained injuries about his head and body and was taken to the Leonora Cottage Hospital by the police and pronounced dead on arrival.

The driver’s vehicle was impounded and is currently lodged at the Leonora Police Station.
