A cyclist was fatally struck down on Saturday on the Herstelling Public Road, East Bank Demerara (EBD) as a motor lorry was turning out of a cross street.

The dead man has been identified as 57-year-old Bridgemohan Persaud of Lot 84 Farm Squatting Area, EBD. Police Commander of Region 4 ‘B’, Linden Isles told Stabroek News yesterday that the driver of the motor lorry was charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

According to Isles, the driver of the motor lorry told investigators that he was exiting Tank Street, making his way onto the public road when he felt he had driven over an object.

This, the commander said, led the driver to probe what it was and found Persaud and the bicycle on the ground.

Persaud, a father of three was picked up with injuries about his body and rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital for medical attention. He was pronounced dead on arrival, Isles related.
