Milaimi Alli, who was on trial for the 2009 murder of her husband, fuel dealer Ramzan Alli, was yesterday freed of the murder charge.

Milaimi, a mother of five, was before Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Vigil-ance Magistrate’s Court on a charge that in the company of another, between July 11, 2009 and July 12, 2009, at Coldingen, East Coast Demerara, she murdered Ramzan Alli.

Her attorney, Bernard DaSilva, disclosed that the prosecutor withdrew the charge on the advice of the Director of Public Prosecu-tions due to a lack of evidence, protracted delays and the lengthy time it took for the charge to be laid.

In 2009, the police said that Ramzan Alli was discovered dead with a plastic bag duct-taped over his head, in the trunk of a rental car along the Coldin-gen Railway Embankment Road. The man had left his home around 9.20 pm on the previous night after receiving a phone call. The police added that after he did not return home, his relatives and employees conducted a search and found the rented vehicle on the road the following morning.

The police were subsequently informed and a search later revealed Ramzan Alli’s body in the trunk. At the time, police said robbery did not appear to be a motive behind his murder.

In April of 2019, the police sought the whereabouts of Milaimi Alli for questioning in relation to the murder of her husband. Just days after the bulletin was issued, the widow was arrested at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Timehri.
