Thirteen COVID deaths in December

Thirteen new COVID-19 cases were recorded yesterday after 239 more persons were tested for the virus and for the month of December there were 13 deaths.  According to the Ministry of Health’s COVID-19 dashboard, the 13 new cases pushed the total number in the country to 6,332. It also showed the total number of persons tested to date in the country at 38,257.

A look at the regional distribution of confirmed cases shows that the new cases were recorded in four of the ten administrative regions. Two new cases were recorded in Region One, three in Region Three and four cases each in regions Four and Five.

The country now has 343 active cases, six of whom are in institutional isolation while 337 are in home isolation. Five persons remain patients at the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit. Eleven more persons have recovered from the virus increasing the total number of recovered cases to 5,820.

The data further indicates that 909 COVID-19 cases were recorded from December 1 to 31 while 13 deaths were recorded for the month. A total of 7,902 persons were tested for the virus in December. The data further shows that 246 cases were recorded in Region Ten, making it the region to record the highest number of cases for the month. Region Four had the second highest number of cases recorded at 244.

Of the 343 active cases, 186 are from Region Four, 76 are from various areas in Georgetown, 57 are from the East Coast of Demerara, and 53 are from the East Bank of Demerara. Region Ten has 80 active cases with the majority originating from the Wismar community.

Additional information received from the Ministry of Health shows that a total of 26 cases were recorded since the reopening of the airports. As it relates to the 164 deaths that were recorded as a result of the virus, 103 were males while 61 were females. Region Four has recorded the majority of deaths at 85 which accounts for 52% of the deaths recorded to date. Based on the data given, Guyana’s case fatality rate currently stands at 2.59%
