Begin 2021 on a better footing

Congratulations! 2021 is here and you survived one of the toughest years for the globe in modern history. However, let’s leave the insane year behind by eating, drinking, indulging, consuming and taking in the things we love the most.

I can hear you thinking: “But Emmerson, I will gain weight if I over-indulge and I will feel guilty because of it.”

No. The reason you gain 5 lbs overnight is not because you ate an extra 5 lbs of food, but merely because of these factors:

1. You didn’t sleep well last night.

2. Your muscles are very sore.

3. You are expecting or on your period.

4. You’re holding extra waste.

5. Your salt consumption increased.

6. Your water intake increased.

7. Carb (glycogen) storage increased.

They all retain and hold on to water in your body: Extra weight. But, only a fraction of how much you eat and drink in one day will actually be stored as fat, and the water retained will go away as soon as you get back to your regular workout, exercise and eating routine again.

It’s on these rare occasions and festive moments, we absolutely shouldn’t be stressing about our eating, instead we should enjoy the start of 2021 and focus on having a lovely time. I think we all deserve that considering what we have been dealing with since last March.

For the New Year, let us leave the bad habits of postponing, pleasing others and feeling guilty behind. 2021 is here and what better reason is there to move on, than having lived through the worst year ever for many of you out there. Regardless of how clichéd it may sound, get everything sorted right now, build your confidence and let’s make 2021 the best year, ever.

Start by doing the following:

1. Get up and get going, no excuses, you are way better at everything than you think you are. If you fail, remember that failures are necessary for growth and never hurt as much as you think they do.

2. Always do the right thing, you can’t go wrong with that.

3. Follow through, do what you say you will do, people respect that.

4. Think long term. Building confidence and stronger bonds with yourself take time, trust the process.

5.  Do more of what makes you feel happy; do yourself good.

Cheers to a better 2021. Happy New Year my people!
