A post-mortem examination has determined that Deodat (only name), the alcoholic pensioner whose lifeless body was found floating in a trench at Hampton Court, Essequibo Coast last Saturday, died from drowning and cirrhosis of the liver.

The 74-year-old Devonshire Castle, Essequibo Coast resident, who was also known as “John”, is believed to have drowned sometime between January 6th and January 9th, 2021.

Stabroek News previously reported that Deodat was last seen alive by his daughter at around 5.30 pm on January 6th, when he left her home.

The police said that according to the man’s daughter, Deodat, who appeared to be intoxicated, left her residence to head home. However, he never made it home, causing family members to become worried and a search was launched as a result.

The police report said that at about 6.30 am last Saturday, family members found the body of the man floating with his face down in a trench. An alarm was raised and the body was pulled out and positively identified as Deodat.

The man was subsequently transported to the Suddie Public Hospital, where he was examined by a doctor on duty and officially pronounced dead on arrival.

Meanwhile, a relative of the deceased told Stabroek News that Deodat, who lived with him, was last seen on Wednesday.

The man explained that relatives were not unduly alarmed after he did not return home on Wednesday since it was a habit of his to visit his sister after uplifting his pension.

However, after the man did not return home on Thursday family members became concerned and contacted his sister but no one had seen him.

Subsequently, a search party was formed and he was later found dead in the trench. He is expected to be laid to rest today.
