Guyana last evening received a field hospital from Qatar which is expected to be set up in the compound of the West Demerara Regional Hospital.

The field hospital was flown into Guyana by a Qatari military aircraft which landed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport. It was officially received by Minister of Health, Dr Frank Anthony.

On Monday during a COVID-19 update, Anthony had stated that in 2020, President Irfaan Ali had had discussions with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, about the two countries’ relations and had discussed issues relating to the novel coronavirus.

At that time he said, Qatar pledged to support Guyana’s fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. “The hospital would be able to accommodate about 60 beds and it has all the necessary equipment for critically ill patients” Dr. Anthony informed during Monday’s update.

This, he said, will boost Guyana’s capacity to handle COVID-19 cases as the hospital will be equipped with ventilators and monitors.

In a post on the Office of the President’s Facebook page, the President thanked the Emir and the people of Qatar for their support. President Ali wrote, “Weeks after my inauguration, the Emir and I spoke and he promised to fly in a field hospital and accessories; today he delivered on that promise.”

He further mentioned that Guyana will soon be establishing an embassy in Qatar to continue fostering relations between the two countries.
