Strathspey man for High Court trial over murder of mother-in-law

Linden Junior Isaacs, was yesterday committed to stand trial at the High Court over the fatal stabbing of his mother-in-law, Velma Pickering.

Isaacs, 28, of Strathspey Squatting Area, ECD, was committed by Magistrate Alisha George yesterday at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.

He is accused of murdering Velma Pickering on May 11 at Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara.

Stabroek News had reported that the 56-year-old woman, who was the man’s mother-in-law, was attacked and stabbed several times about her body with an ice pick. She managed to flee from her house, where she had been with her toddler grandson, and ventured into her neighbour’s yard, where she collapsed. A neighbour had told this newspaper that the woman called out to her for help but she was inside of her house at the time. When she rushed out she saw that the woman’s body was drenched in blood.

The police were summoned to the scene and they took the woman to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Neighbours have said that the woman would frequently protect her daughter from being abused by the suspect.
