Residents of Canje Street, Section ‘K’ Campbellville, Georgetown, are concerned about a new property which is being constructed on their street that appears to be a commercial one within the residential zone.

The property which is reportedly expected to be three stories upon completion is being constructed at the corner of Canje and Sheriff streets.

When Stabroek News visited the site, it appeared as though construction had recently started there. One concerned resident who asked to not be named, told this newspaper that from all indications the property was purchased by a commercial entity and due to the scale of the initial construction that is ongoing, he and other neighbours are concerned about the property being put to commercial use in the residential area.

The man pointed out that based on how the construction started, it has raised eyebrows as they are concerned about the possibility of a business bringing additional traffic to the already narrow street.

At the time of the visit, one of the neighbours stated that she was not made aware of who purchased the plot and what exactly is being constructed there.

According to Deputy City  Mayor, Alfred Mentore, who is also the constituency councillor, he was made aware of the concerns of the residents in the area recently and subsequently had the city engineer’s department conduct verification.

Further, he noted that he also did personal checks to verify that the property would be a residential one. “I also took the opportunity to look at the plan myself to establish the nature of the construction and I was able to establish that the building would be a three-story styled building. It will be residential,” Mentore assured.

The Deputy Mayor went on to say that from the plans that he saw, the two upper flats are expected to be residential while the ground floor is expected to be used for parking. He too iterated that the area is a residential zone but that the ongoing project there is consistent with what is required of the area.

When asked about the concerns raised by the residents he promised he would keep an eye on the construction to ensure that it goes according to the plan that was presented and fits into the residential zone.
