Four prisoners burrow out of Lethem lockup

Police were up to last night searching for four prisoners, including two Venezuelan nationals, who escaped from the Lethem Police Station through lockup through a hole they dug in the ground.

The escape occurred sometime between 12.05 am and 7am on Friday.

The Guyana Police Force identified the four men as Jack King Paul, 36, of Kwatamang Village, North Rupununi, Clarence Rodney, 20, of Lethem Central, Yon Rogg Hernandez, 26, called ‘John Roberts,’ who is Venezuelan national of Tabatinga Lethem, and Xarlos Edwards Thomas, 18, also of Tabatinga and also a Venezuelan national.

According to a police statement issued last evening, when the scene was visited around 7.05 am by a number of policemen, a metal rod was found on the eastern side of the lockup next to a hole in the ground which measured to about three feet in width, length and depth. Further it was observed that the surface of the said hole had a two-inch layer of concrete with red sand beneath.

The statement noted that just around 7am another prisoner alerted police officers to the absence of the four prisoners from the lockup.
