Man accused of killing neighbour over cigarettes surrenders

The Chateau Margot, East Coast Demerara man who is accused of fatally stabbing his neighbor over a pack of cigarettes has surrendered to the police.

Regional Division 4 ‘C’ Commander Mahendra Sewarnarine yesterday confirmed that Devon Boucher, 27, of Chateau Margot Squatting Area, turned himself over to police on Friday morning, about half a day after the fatal attack. He explained that Boucher went to the Cove and John Police Station.

The deceased, Clifton Bhagwandat, was fatally stabbed on Thursday evening at about 5.30 pm after a dispute over a pack of cigarettes.

A relative of the deceased further disclosed yesterday that the two neighbours had a misunderstanding after Bhagwandat approached Boucher to buy a pack of cigarettes but Boucher told him a price that was not to his liking. The now deceased man then stated that he would buy it somewhere else. Bhagwandat’s sister told this newspaper that her brother was stabbed in front of his wife as they were sitting together at the time.
