A neighbour was yesterday charged and remanded to prison over the murder of Clifton Bhagwandat, a horse cart operator who was stabbed over a pack of cigarettes.

Devon Boucher, also known as “Kingman”, 26, of Chateau Margot Squatting Dam, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Alisha George at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.

He was not allowed to plead to the charge and was remanded to prison.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF), in a report, stated that on February 25th, Bhagwandat went to Boucher to purchase a pack of cigarette.

According to the report, Bhagwandat was short on cash and an argument ensued between the two men. As a result of the argument, Bhagwandat took his money back from Boucher, while stating that he was heading to a Chinese shop instead to make his purchase.

The report stated that Boucher then ran into his home, armed himself with a knife and started to stab the deceased about his body.

The deceased, in an attempt to escape his attacker, ran but fell on the dam, after which he became motionless.

The matter was reported to the Beterverwagting Police Station and the Emergency Medical Ser-vice was summoned but pronounced Bhagwandat dead at the scene.

Boucher, who initially fled, turned himself over to the police on February 26th, 2021.
