Strengthen key juridical institutions to address racism

Dear Editor,

Racism exists on all sides. It becomes a real problem when people accuses you of being racist because of your ethnicity even when you have not done anything remotely associated with racism. How to tackle this issue with sensitivity? Is having a discourse on racism a way forward? Or is that just a way for people to vent their frustration and anger? It is difficult to see how it could be otherwise when no policy comes out of such discussions. It would be better to strengthen institutions in Guyana to deal with people’s frustration and anger. This can be done by strengthening the justice system. We’re talking here about civil courts, tribunals, and citizens’ advice associations where people can seek help and redress from. We’re not going to change people’s attitudes and behaviour overnight. But having the above is a step in the right direction.

Sincerely,

Sean Ori
