March month’s new meaning (here)

God still `loves’ criminals and riggers?

My lead caption will be dealt with by way of personalised levity and very serious recall.

For starters my late very-well known uncle Headmaster Arthur B.C. – (ABC) Fenty was born on the thirteenth day of March. And so was the lady who married me! They were both well-known Primary School teachers. (For eleven years I thoroughly enjoyed being a reasonably–successful teacher too.)

So you see every one of the year’s twelve months would hold some personal significance for individuals and families. Then there are universal national, political, even cultural events that happen in specific months. Some actually planned and scheduled.  Others very spontaneous.

Frankly Speaking, at one time for me – 20/30 years ago- March month recalled the horrific, savage countrywide racially-motivated violence, bombings and murders of March 1964. Kowsilla, a striking sugar-worker protesting at the Leonora WCD Estate had her body severed by a tractor driven by a strike-breaker.

Of course Guyana’s rebellious anti-colonial pioneer Cheddi Jagan was born then buried in March. I think Desmond Hoyte was born in March too. So also was the famed Walter Rodney. What a month!

March 2020: To remember? Or forget

Frankly Speaking, I know that humans can more easily forgive than forget. That which is lodged in your psyche hardly leaves your memory, your being. It “grows” with you.

My old-time, erstwhile political party – the PNC – has ensured that all of us, from say twelve years old to ninety-plus, will remember what they did to electoral politics of and in March 2020.

From December 2018 when a parliamentary vote of confidence rendered the Coalition outfit a Caretaker government prior to new elections, the PNC – masquerading as some “APNU” – used and misused the courts, along with political bullyism, to still manipulate the levers of governmental power for 14 months.

The Brigadier–President finally consented to elections for March 02, 2020. Then for five months CARICOM and the world watched on as the PNC attempted a blatant electoral power grab to deny a majority the manifestation of their will. CARICOM’s highest court even had to adjudicate that thirty-three (33) , according to our own Constitution, was a simple majority of  sixty- five (65). As CARICOM laughed at us – as they once did (1968-1992) – some of their lawyers hired by the PNC, earned millions! Surely playwrights, including Shakespeare, would have discovered rich material from our Guyana’s Ides of March.

Incidentally I must confess my own personal human short-coming in finding it difficult to hold PNC Parliamentarians in any regard. Knowing that they all waited to benefit from a stolen election. You – all please pray for me that I might still discover some political, ethical maturity. Thanks.

Propaganda, Facts, “Spokespersons”

As a  one-time student of political propaganda and later an operative in terms of  Public Relations and Public Education, I continue to be fascinated by how some try to use good speech, modern-day technological opportunities, mis-information, lies, interpretations and sometimes truth to persuade others that their causes, positions and ideas are the right, worthy paths to follow.

It takes a really great political “Spokesperson” or spin doctor to fool me these days. They could utilise all the modern media they wanted. I would advise that they study the earliest Roman Catholic popes and their “emotional” machinery using truth a lot, when attempting to impress or convince.

And by the way young PNC Turks: listen to the PPP’s Benn, Jagdeo, Nandlall, Datadin, Edghill, even Ramotar and Teixeira to understand how facts – and a little fiction – should be utilized. Free advice, eh?

Easter, God, Sinners, Riggers

As Easter- the Christians’ premier observance – approaches, I had cause to consult the Christian Text at John Chapter 3, verses 2 to 21.

All the above seek to explain God’s love for his creations on earth. So much so that he “gave” his earthly son in death to save errant mankind. So how has that divine gesture worked out? The Devil/Satan, as an architect of sin, seems to have really rivalled God. Just look around this miserable world.

Anyhow I am told to believe that God actually forgives repentant sinners. Serial killers? Repeat rapists? Child molesters?  All are worthy of redemption because they were all created in his image? Assist me here please.

When I see PNC Christian types evoking the name of God for everything (sinful), I realise he has to be tolerant. After all He seems to be ready to forgive riggers! What mercy!

Ponder well…

1) This March also saw Guyana losing prominent stalwarts. Among them – Mr Jardim, DP Sankar,  David Yankana. (And a friend of mine, Billy…)

2) A sixteen-year-old accused of the murder of a ten-year-old. Does the 16-year-old know about guns?

3) Upkeep the Stadium, the National Park and D’Uban Park! Our millions are at stake.

4) They handcuffed and shackled Winston Brassington, Ashni Singh and Trevor Benn. Police Court procedures? Could those gentlemen sprint away as flight risks? Ho-ho-ho.

’Til next week!
