Soldier dies in Homestretch Ave collision

A soldier died and several other persons including a 7-year-old were injured after two cars collided along Homestretch Ave-nue, Georgetown on Tuesday night.

Dead is Brian Mitchell, 36, a resident of Craig Street, Campbell-ville, Georgetown and a member of the Guyana Defen-ce Force (GDF).

The police in press release issued yesterday confirmed that an investigation is ongoing into the accident which occurred around 9.15 pm.

At the time, Mitchell was the driver of motorcar, PNN 5515 which was also transporting  a 7-year-old relative.

He collided with motor car, PVV 3684 which was driven by Taishan Shanks. There was a female passenger in this car.

The police said investigations revealed that motor car, PVV 3684 was proceeding east along Homestretch Avenue while Mitchell was proceeding west on the said road.

According to the police, Shanks alleged that while he was in the vicinity of Help and Shelter he saw Mitchell swerve from the southern side of the road from behind a motor vehicle and into his path.

As a result, the vehicles collided.

Mitchell and the 7 year-old were picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH). Mitchell was subsequently pronounced dead. The 7-year-old was treated for a broken right leg and later admitted. His condition is listed as stable.

Shanks and the occupant of his motor car were also taken to the said institution. They were treated for lacerations about their bodies and were later discharged.
