Cops arrest man accused of killing cousin’s boyfriend

The man accused of stabbing Devon Xavier to death has been apprehended by the police but has remained silent so far.

The police, in a press release, stated that the 39-year-old man was arrested at Cummings Park, ‘E’ Field, Sophia, Georgetown, after information about his whereabouts was given to them.

On Saturday last, Xavier, 20, of La Penitence Street, Albouystown was fatally stabbed by his girlfriend’s cousin at her ‘A’ Field, Sophia home.

The police said on Monday that Xavier was visiting his girlfriend at home when they were approached by her father and cousin.

The report said Xavier’s girlfriend immediately told him to leave since her family was not in favour of their relationship.

According to the report, the woman was subsequently instructed by her father to go inside, but in the process of doing so she witnessed her cousin grab Xavier, after which he took out a knife from his waistband and dealt him a stab to the right side of his chest.

As a result, Xavier collapsed. His body was picked up and examined by a doctor, who pronounced him dead.

A post-mortem examination determined his cause of death to be lacerations to the lungs and heart.

Meanwhile, Joel Johnson, an uncle of the deceased, told Stabroek News that Xavier shared a year-long relationship with his girlfriend and spent most of his time with her.

Johnson shared that he was informed that Xavier was not favoured by his girlfriend’s father, who on Saturday night, while in the company of another, saw Xavier present with his daughter.

The man said a scuffle might have ensued and resulted in the death of his nephew.

He noted that he was informed of Xavier’s demise by his girlfriend’s brother, who related the tragic news.

Johnson, who is still trying to come to grips with the killing of the young man, stated that there was no cause for his death.

He described the deceased as a “cool, calm and collected” individual. Xavier worked as a mechanic.
