I note with interest the call by environmentalist Annette Arjoon-Martins for the sanctioning of the company responsible for the damaged mangroves in the Malgre Tout/Versailles area. Indeed the Government of Guyana has a program whereby large sums of money is spent on the planting and caring of the mangroves, therefore this call should be more stern, as a company or entity that comes into a country with no regards for the rules and regulations of that country should be thrown out on their ears – with penalties attached. Their coming here and requesting permission to operate their business here and then flouting the laws of the country fully qualifies them for expulsion. Penalties must also be attached so much so that a strong message be sent to all investors that they own their investments, not our land, and they must abide by the rules. Guyana is a sovereign state and Guyanese should stand up for their rights, and at least support those who are standing up for them. Thank you.
