Youth critical after being shot by guard at Diamond supermarket

A youth is now in critical condition at the George-town Public Hospital, after he was shot in his leg by a security guard on duty at the Tan Yuan Meng Supermarket, at Diamond, East Bank Demerara.

Flavian James, 22, was shot by security guard Carlos Pollydore, 34, at about 8.15 pm on Wednesday night.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF), in a press release, stated that the victim and his associates arrived at the supermarket and began drinking.

While there it is alleged that James jumped in and out of the vehicles of customers while they were making purchases.

As a result of his actions, the police said Pollydore warned James to desist from his actions but he became annoyed and allegedly broke a Guinness bottle and advanced towards Pollydore despite being warned.

As a result, police say, Pollydore shot him to his left leg above his knee.

The police were called and the victim was transported to the Diamond Diagnostic Hospital. A later update provided revealed that the warhead entered the front of Pollydore’s left leg just above the knee and exited behind the left knee.

James was later referred to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) in a critical condition, while Pollydore was arrested and his firearm along with 13 live rounds of ammunition and one spent shell were lodged. He was taken to the Golden Grove Police Station.

Meanwhile, a relative of James, who asked not to be named, stated that he made efforts to stop the two men from arguing but was unsuccessful.

He explained that James was first struck with the bottle by Pollydore and later used the said bottle to advance on the security guard.

The relative explained that the bottle did not hit Pollydore but he subsequently shot James.

It is believed that the argument started from the opening of customers’ doors.
