Bright, Archibald land long jump gold

Usual suspects, Emanuel Archibald Chantoba Bright , Daniel Williams and Devaun Barrington were among the standout performers when the curtain came down on the National Senior Champion-ships yesterday.

In almost ideal conditions for competing at the National Track and Field Centre at Leonora, Archibald and Bright took their talents to the pit and disturbed the sand with gold medal winning performances in the long jump.

Two days after recording his personal best in the blue-riband 100m, Archibald, the National long jump record holder (8.12m) showed his versatility dispatching a field of other jumpers to win the event with a best jump of 7.82m.

Bright who won the women’s triple jump event on Friday night, returned to win her pet event with a leap of 6.28m.

Williams who attends Hinds Community College in the USA brought his talents back to the 592 to win the men’s 200m in  21.06s.

Akeem Stewart who placed second in the 100m, earned another silver medal in the 200m after clocking 21.35s. Noelex Holder (21.46s) also mirrored his third place finish in the 100m in the 200m.

Juvonna Cornette (24.85s) won the female version of the event of the half-lap event.

Earlier in the day, Joanna Archer (2:12.62s) and Barrington (1:53.02s) made hay in the sunshine, scorching their rivals to easily win their respective 800m events.

Cleveland Thomas (16:01.72) also got his revenge on Sir Kennard Hartog who upset him in the 10,000m by turning the tables on him in the men’s 5000m on the final day of the three-day fixture which also saw Julio Sinclair taking gold in the men’s shot put with a throw of 16.12m.

Annesia DeBreu winner of the  women’s discus event, added another gold to her resume by winning the women’s shot put in 10.30m yesterday. 

President of the Athletics body, Aubrey Hutson who was yesterday re-elected for his third consecutive four-year term, labeled the event a success.

He also stated that the next fixture on the local calendar will be the National Youth and Junior Championships tentatively set for sometime next month.
