Chairman of Trinidad financial group killed

(Trinidad Guardian) The chairman of the Maritime Financial Group and one of six people charged with corruption in the Piarco Airport construction projects, John Smith, 74, has been murdered.

He was killed at home in Maraval and police are investigating a link to a close relative.

Preliminary investigations indicated that at about 4.30 pm on Friday officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at Saddle Road, Maraval.

Upon arrival the officers saw a man lying on the ground.

The officers also saw a woman wearing a green t-shirt and black long tights lying next to him holding his hand.

Officers interviewed the woman who police alleged claimed that she killed him.

PC Hartman then cautioned the woman and arrested her.

The incident was allegedly witnessed by two children ages nine and 13.
