One week after she was admitted to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), a 26-year-old first- time mother gave birth to the country’s third set of triplets to be delivered at the facility over the past six years.

Born one minute apart, the triplets – two boys and one girl were delivered via C-section just after 9 am on July 22nd. They are Khaleel, Addiel and Reya Simon.

While the babies were born healthy and are doing well, they remain hospitalized as doctors continue to monitor them.

Bacchus’ doctor, Dr Abel Caesar yesterday told Stabroek News that the average length of a pregnancy for triplets is 32 weeks.

However, Bacchus carried her babies for 34 weeks and 4 days.

Apart from some complications during the early stage, Dr Caesar said that Bacchus had a normal pregnancy.

During an interview with Stabroek News yesterday, Bacchus, a nail technician of Meadow Bank, East Bank Demerara (EBD) said that giving birth to triplets left her  “overjoyed” and feeling overwhelmed.

She explained that she found out she was pregnant on Christmas Day, 2020. Shortly after, Bacchus said she learnt she was expecting triplets after her first ultrasound showed three embryos.

“When I first found out I was in shock…I started crying. I was asking myself several questions. How am I going to do this and even though I was crying I was so happy at the same time. It was like that at first,” she expressed.

Bacchus shared that the first four months of her pregnancy were difficult since she was ill for most of the time.

“Really bad sick. Lost a whole lot of weight and so and after the four months, I just took it one step at a time and I just kept praying and then I began to get better and better and I grew larger and larger at the same time,” Bacchus related.

However, after recovering, she said the excitement grew as she awaited the arrival of her first- borns.  “I was excited to meet them and now they are here and I am so in love with them and I am so thankful for them as well,” Bacchus said.

“I carried them really well….every time I did an ultrasound, they were flourishing,” she added.

Among the thoughts which worried Bacchus the most during pregnancy was whether her body would be able to carry through the process.  “I didn’t know if my body could have adjusted to it…because when you are pregnant with multiple babies it’s very risky, high risk but I used to pray a lot and so forth,” Bacchus noted.

She said she was also worried about how she would manage to take care of her babies but then remembered her supportive family who are willing to assist in the process. “When you get triplets, the most you do is pray. You don’t make rational decisions. I do have a lot of family members who are willing to lend a helping hand and my intention is to just pray and take it one step at a time,” Bacchus said.

Bacchus is not married but has been in a relationship with the father of her children for almost six years.

“I am just here waiting for my babies to be okay so that I can go home,” she said.
