This would be one inspirational example of rising above the level of the combatant

Dear Editor,

One was very impressed, perhaps inspired, by Dr. Bertrand Ramcharan’s article published in SN of September 8. His was such a substantive appeal for leadership, which indeed so many generations have sought in the country of which he speaks, and has represented. However, by some deliberate intention or intuition by the Editor, the author’s plea rings a doleful note in relation to the publication immediately below in which the President, our highest leader, is reported to refrain from rising above the opposing counterpart and show to the world that his office is truly imbued with the sense of ‘unity’ so often fulminated, indeed by both sides. Here’s hoping that Dr. Ramcharan’s would have inspired at least one example of rising not only above the level of the combatant; but at the same time, to the expectations of those CARICOM supporters, including the CCJ, and win their applause, in confirming the appointments of Chancellor and Chief Justice of Guyana. There is no question that such a decision will be seen by many others and Dr. Ramcharan as a meaningful response to the latter’s insistence on “Fairness in a Multi-racial Society”.

Sincerely,

E.B. John
