The vigorous 2021 Online Chess Olympiad ended on Wednesday last, with tournament favourite Russia winning following a victory over the USA.

Russia beat the USA 3.5 points to 2.5 points in the first encounter, and again by the identical margin in the second and final match. Earlier, in the semi-final matches, Russia had defeated China, while USA outplayed India, setting up the inevitable Russia vs USA clash.

A total of 153 countries participated in the Chess Olympiad with Guyana being among the lot, though not with its strongest team. Some other strong chess nations competed without their best players owing to other commitments. Jamaica was the top performer for the English-speaking Caribbean in the 2021 Online Chess Olympiad.
