A Patentia Housing Scheme, West Coast Demerara (WCD), cane harvester was crushed to death by an excavator while at work at the Uitvlugt Estate Backdam, WCD.

The deceased has been identified as Deochand Lallchand, 62, of Lot 114 Patentia Housing Scheme. The man’s death is said to have occurred on Wednes-day at about 10:30 hrs. Police enquiries revealed that the man had been picking up cane when the excavator came into contact with him.

According to the police, excavator operator, Vickram Seepersaud, 44, of Lot 692 Recht Door Zee, La Parfaite Harmonie, West Coast Demerara, was operating the excavator when it reversed onto Lallchand. The report stated that Lallchand was picking up cane a short distance behind the excavator which Seepersaud began operating.

The excavator started to reverse at a slow rate of speed and collided with Lallchand’s feet. This caused him to fall to the ground whereupon the excavator rolled over him smashing his body. He was picked up and taken by the police to the Leonora Cottage Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Lallchand’s body was later escorted to the Ezekiel Funeral Home where it is awaiting a post mortem examination.

Seepersaud was arrested and placed into custody while the police continue investigations.
