Palmyra accident leaves West Berbice senior dead

An accident along the Palmyra Public Road on Monday left a West Coast Berbice pensioner dead after he was struck by a hire car, which was allegedly speeding at the time. 

Dead is Abdool Rahim Lace-man, 69, of Lot 102 ‘A’ Woodley Park, West Coast Berbice.

According to information gathered, the driver of the hire car, HC 8500, was proceeding towards New Amsterdam while Laceman was proceeding in the opposite direction on the motorcycle CF 4743 when the accident occurred at around 10.30 am.

Eyewitnesses yesterday told Stabroek News that the driver of the car attempted to overtake a truck when he clipped the motorcycle. 

As a result, Laceman was launched into the air and he landed on the car’s front windshield after which he fell to the ground. 

Paramedics who arrived at the scene yesterday were unable to find a pulse on Laceman, who seemed to have sustained a major head injury. His body was then transported to the New Amster-dam Public Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. 

One eyewitness said, “He (the driver) couldn’t a see that motorcycle with the speed he going with and the truck went in front he and then when the man knock he (Laceman) fly up and fall on the windshield and knock his head.”

Following the accident, residents immediately contacted the police, who quickly arrived at the location and launched an investigation. As of yesterday afternoon, the driver of the car, who is from Manchester Village, Corentyne, remained in police custody.
