Teacher hurt after men pelt Leonora bar in curfew row

Police are on the hunt for four men who pelted bottles leaving a teacher injured on Sunday night after the owner of a Leonora, West Coast Demerara (WCD) bar informed them that he would closing in keeping with the national COVID-19 curfew.

The police in a statement yesterday said that the incident took place around 9 pm  at Jit’s Sports bar situated at Leonora Back Street, WCD.

The teacher, who was a patron at the bar at the time was taken to the Leonora Hospital where he was treated and sent away.

According to the police, enquiries disclosed that the teacher and three of his friends were at the bar when the proprietor informed them that he would  be closing due to the curfew. The four suspects and two females were seated close by and the proprietor also informed them. However, the men began to behave disorderly, the police said.

As a result, the teacher went to the suspects and asked that they desist.  A scuffle then ensued between the teacher and one of the suspects during which the teacher’s t-shirt was damaged and his chain broken. The police said the proprietor them put the four men and two women out of his premises.

The men then started to pelt bottles into the yard, one of which hit the teacher in his forehead. The suspects then escaped in a white motorcar, registration number unknown.

The matter was reported to the police.
