Canje couple arrested after police find cannabis in home

A man and a woman are now in custody after 847 grammes of cannabis were found in their home, the police have said.

The Guyana Police Force in a statement on Thursday said that a search exercise was conducted on Thursday between 12:00 hrs and 12:30 hrs at Lot 18 Betsy Ground, Canje, Berbice.

During the exercise the police discovered a black bulky bag containing leaves, seeds, and stems suspected to be cannabis.

The search was conducted in the presence of the two persons who are now in police custody and the bag was found under the inner stairway that leads to the upper flat of the property.

Further searches were carried out in the kitchen and a dark grey bag containing two transparent zip lock bags and three transparent plastic wraps, all containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis, were found under a sink, the statement added. Following the discoveries, the two persons were cautioned, arrested and taken to the New Amsterdam Police Station along with the suspected cannabis.

The suspected narcotics were weighed in their presence and amounted to 847 grammes. Police said investigations are ongoing.
