Prime Minister Mark Phillips, who has responsibility for telecommunications, today filed charges against Gregory Dean, Chief Executive Officer of U-Mobile over the alleged unauthorised use of the spectrum.

Dean on behalf of U-Mobile which operates as Digicel Guyana has been accused of unauthorized use of the spectrum in the 1800 MHz in breach of section 67(b) of the Telecommunications Act.

He has also been accused of unauthorized usage of the 700 MHz band.

The matters are to be heard in the Magistrate’s court on October 22nd.

While the PPP/C government has liberalised the telecommunications sector, there is a view that the deregulation is intended to favour certain players in the sector with close ties to the ruling party.
