Guyanese national basketball players and Plaisance Guardians duo Akeem Cranston and Israel Yaw are the recipients of athletic scholarships from ASA College in New York City, USA.
This was confirmed by Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF) Technical Director, Junior Hercules, during an exclusive interview with Stabroek Sport yesterday.
“The scholarships were made possible through the efforts of Gordon James through the Foundation Hope organization. The organisations for which facilitated in ensuring the processing and transition were the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation and the Guyana Olympic Association,” said Hercules.
He added, “Akeem Crandon will be pursuing an associate degree in Health Information Medical Records Technology with an option to continue. Israel Yaw will be pursuing an associate degree in Business Administration with the option to continue.”
The duo departed local shores yesterday to commence their freshmen year. ASA College is a private for profit college that features two branches in New York City, New York and Hialeah, Florida.
The institution, which has three campuses, [Midtown, Manhattan, Downtown, Brooklyn and Hialeah, Florida], offers bachelor’s degrees, associate degrees and professional certificates in the divisions of business administration, health disciplines, legal studies, and computer technology.
The school competes in 13 programmes at the New York section while the Florida location features in 10 disciplines. All programs participate in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division 1.
Hercules further disclosed, “Both players represented Guyana in the recent FIBA World Cup Prequalifer Qualifier in El Salvador and are amongst the top youth basketball players in Guyana. Both players are members of the Plaisance Guardians Basketball Club and are students of the Government Technical Institute (Israel Yaw) and President’s College (Akeem Crandon).
“On behalf of the Guyana Basketball Federation, I would like to wish both athletes success in their academic and basketball careers,” Hercules said.
