Beverage vendor dies in High St crash

A Kitty beverage vendor died yesterday morning after being involved in an accident on High Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown in the vicinity of the Carnegie School of Home Economics.

The dead man has been identified as 48-year-old Eon Howard of Lot 433 ‘B’ Field, Sophia and of Kitty, Georgetown.

Police yesterday morning said the accident occurred just after midnight and Howard died on the scene.

At the time of the accident, the now deceased man was riding his motorcycle CK 7303. Howard, police investigations revealed was proceeding south on High Street at a fast rate when he lost control of the motorcycle and crashed into a concrete drain located on the eastern side of the road.

As a result, he was pinned by the motorcycle. Police said he was assisted out of the drain by public-spirited citizens but was pronounced dead after being examined on the scene by Dr. Joseph of the Emergency Medical Service Unit.

Yesterday at this mother’s residence in Sophia, his family was trying to come to grips with his death.  His brother Mark, told Stabroek News that the family was informed of the accident at around 12.30 yesterday morning.

“I got a call from one of my sisters. I was at work and left around 1.45 am. When I got there he was already dead and was lying on his back on the road,” the brother said.

The brother related that details of the accident remain unclear to the family and they are waiting to view footage from CCTV cameras to show exactly what occurred.

“From what I understand is that he lost control of the bike and he slide into the drain and hit his head. He seemed to be conscious for a long period of time and a vagrant pass and saw him and took him out and he was left lying there until the police came,” the brother related from what was told to the family.

The body of the motorcyclist was then taken to Memorial Funeral Home, awaiting a post-mortem examination, police said.

He is survived by his son, parents and siblings.
