A 17-year-old motorcyclist died on Sunday night in a hit-and-run accident along the Ogle, East Coast Demerara (ECD) Railway Embankment.

Dead is Romeo Edgehill, a construction worker of Better Hope, ECD.

The accident occurred around 9pm.

Deputy Director of the Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) Corporate Communications Unit, Stan Gouveia, in a statement yesterday said the driver of the white wagon fled the scene and is yet to be apprehended.

At the time of the accident, Edgehill, who the police said was not wearing a helmet was proceeding east along the northern side of the Railway Embankment.

The motor car was proceeding in the said direction in front of Edgehill’s motorcycle.

According to a police report, enquiries revealed that Edgehill tried to overtake the motorcar at which point the driver made a sudden turn and collided with the motorcyclist.

“While the driver (Edgehill) of the motorcycle was in the process of overtaking the white unknown motorcar, the said motorcar suddenly made a right turn south into Ogle Access Road and in the process collided into the rear portion of the motorcycle causing the driver to lose control and fall onto the road surface,” the statement explained.

As a result of the collision, Edgehill sustained injuries to his head and other parts of his body.

He was picked up in a conscious state and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

His body is presently at the hospital mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination.
