A carpenter on Monday evening succumbed at the Georgetown Public Hospital after he was struck by a light truck which was reversing along the Chesney Housing Scheme access road on Saturday.

Dead is Ramesh Approo, also known as ‘Kiran’, 33, of Chesney Housing Scheme, Corentyne, Berbice.

Approo reportedly sustained serious injuries from his waist down from the 5 pm accident.

According to information gathered, motor lorry, GJJ 7885, was proceeding south at a normal rate of speed when the driver suddenly stopped his vehicle and began to reverse causing him to collide with Approo, who was on an electrical scooter at the time with a pillion rider, Ally Sattaur, 11.

Both Approo and Sattaur were rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital, where Approo was transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital then later to the Georgetown Public Hospital, while the youth was treated at the Port Mourant Hospital for minor injuries sustained.

Approo’s brother-in-law, Tariq Ishak, 31, yesterday morning told Stabroek News that the family was informed around 9 pm on Monday that Approo had succumbed at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

“As soon as they reach home here after visiting they get call that he dead.”

The brother-in-law explained that the driver of the canter is the deceased’s employer. He said the employer and some others were heading to a wedding but Approo did not intend to go since he had promised his wife that he would take her out that same night.

As such he decided to ride behind his employer to uplift his salary after which he would head home.

Ishak further explained that based on the information they received, the employer passed the street where the wedding was located which caused him to have to reverse and he subsequently collided with Approo who was behind him.

“He [deceased] work long with him [canter driver]. He [deceased] was his right-hand man,” Ishak said.

Approo and his wife had been together for over ten years now and only recently had their first child together. “All this time them a live and them just get the baby about two and half months now and them so happy,” the man relayed.

Approo was the sole breadwinner for his family.

Meanwhile, as of yesterday afternoon, the driver of the canter remained in police custody for questioning as the investigation continues.
