New Amsterdam fire leaves four homeless

A fire last evening destroyed a house in New Amsterdam leaving a family of four uncertain of where they would spend the night.

According to information gathered, the fire completely destroyed the Lot 29, 12 Charles Place, New Amsterdam one-flat, two-bedroom house, which was being occupied by Marlon Dehaan, 24, labourer; his wife, Christina Nandalall, 25, housewife; and their two children ages 5 and 7 years old.

Stabroek News was told that Nandalall was in front of the house just around 7 pm when she saw her five-year-old daughter exiting her bedroom after which she noticed smoke emanating from the house.

According to residents, the woman rushed inside where she saw that a mattress was on fire in the second room.

She hurriedly got her children out of the house and alerted neighbours who formed a bucket brigade in an effort to extinguish the fire but their efforts were unsuccessful as the fire quickly spread throughout the house destroying everything in its path.

The New Amsterdam Fire Service after arriving on the scene put out the fire but were unable to save anything.

As of last evening, residents were on the scene assisting the family.
