Amar Dindyal, the 16-year-old labourer who died after a work site accident at Vilvoorden, Essequibo Coast on Saturday, fell an estimated 60 feet, according to one of his co-workers.

Dindyal suffered fatal injuries after he fell from a steel structure at a private rice mill. He was employed by a private contractor to work on a steel bond for the rice miller.

Stabroek News has been told that work has since ceased on the premises and workers are afraid to go back to work on the bond.

According to Shamnarine Lakeram, who was one of the workers at the site at the time of the accident, they heard a sudden impact and then saw the teenager’s body on the ground.

Lakeram said Dindyal fell from approximately 60 feet. “No body don’t want to go work up. The bossman asked him and he said he will go. He and two others boys were working up there along with the bossman and we were down,” Lakeram said.

He related that when he heard the impact of the teen’s body hitting the ground, he ran to help. He saw blood oozing from Dindyal’s mouth. He said that the workers immediately rushed Dindyal to the Suddie Public Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.  “When he fell his skin was cold, cold. And he started to cry. He did not talk nothing. We just try taking him to the hospital but that was it,” Lakeram added.

A post-mortem examination is scheduled for Thursday.

Lakeram is now afraid to go back to work as like Dindyal he is afraid of heights.

The deceased’s family had expressed surprise that he was as high as he was given that he was afraid of heights.

Priya Dindyal was yesterday still trying to cope with the sudden death of her eldest son, who usually assisted her in the home. He also contributed financially to the household.

The mother said that the contractor has reached out and offered his sympathy to the family.
